Show Notes

In this conversation, Erin interviews Aaron Moncur, the owner of Pipeline Design and Engineering, about empathy and leadership. Aaron shares two examples of how empathy has helped him overcome challenges as a leader. In one instance, he had to navigate the possibility of furloughs and layoffs, and in another, he had to ask his team to work overtime on a project. By leading with empathy and inviting open discussions, Aaron was able to maintain a supportive and engaged team. He emphasizes that empathy is a tactical tool that leads to better outcomes and builds a positive culture.

Today on Tactical Empathy:

  • Empathy is not about making a situation okay, but about listening and understanding what a person is going through.
  • Empathy rarely begins with ‘at least’. It’s important to avoid dismissing someone’s struggles by comparing them to others.
  • Leading with empathy and inviting open discussions can lead to better outcomes and build a positive culture.
  • Empathy requires extra work and thinking outside of oneself, which can be challenging for leaders.
  • Taking what’s on the inside, putting it on the outside, and talking about it is a powerful practice for building empathy.
